Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte was published on October 16th, 1847. It is considered one of the greatest romantic Gothic stories ever written. Charlotte Bronte wrote this story in response to the restrictive and hypocritical 19th century belief about women.

The story showcases a rough upbringing and hardships of a middle class girl Jane Eyre. She endures a rough childhood and then is sent to an even rougher charity girls school, Lowood, where the girls are underfed and subjected to punishment and strict rules. Once she graduates she gets a job as a governess. This is where she meets the infamous Mr. Edward Rochester, whom she falls in love with. They have a tumultuous relationship full of passion and playful banter. It is considered a revolutionary piece because of Jane's independent nature. In the book she does not need a man to pave her way in society.

The major themes throughout the book are independence and search for family. Because she is an orphan and has never had a family, she yearns for this love.

Jane Eyre is truly a classic literature piece and although long, is beautifully written and definitely worth the read.
