Here is the National Geographic website with quite a bit of interesting information on the author's life and the book.

Frankenstein

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley was published in 1823. This book is considered one of the greatest chilling Gothic stories in the literary canon. This book was born out of a horror story competition she had with a few of her friends while staying in a cabin in the woods.

Although most people refer to the monster as Frankenstein, in fact the doctor, the man is Frankenstein. The monster is never given a name so as to make him less human.

In the book, Victor Frankenstein sets out to create life. He matriculates into a school, and begins his work there as a maverick.

He succeeds but pays a terrible price for what unnatural dealings he has dabbled in.

The major theme that I found throughout the later half of the book is revenge.

The monster says these words after being rejected and beaten by the DeLacy family.

1. "...feelings of revenge and hatred filled my bosom...[and] I bent my mind towards injury and death."

2. "Revenge became dearer than light or food."
